Dan Jørgensen gives speech to graduates

Friday 18 June 2010, yet another class graduated from the Master?s degree programme in Environmental and Energy Law at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University. European Parliamentarian Dan Jørgensen (The Danish Social Democrats) participated as a guest speaker to emphasise the importance of the study programme.

A Master in Environmental and Energy Law provides an insight into how the complicated legislation regarding energy, climate and environment is to be understood, and how it is to be applied specifically. Such an insight is of vital importance to a great number of companies that are regulated by this particular legislation in their daily operation. This is the statement from Professor Ellen Margrethe Basse and Director of Studies and Professor Birgitte Egelund Olsen, Department of Business Law at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University.

Friday 18 June 2010, 14 additional students graduated with a Master?s degree in Environmental and Energy Law, and by means of the study programme, they have gone in depth with their company or institution?s specific issues within the subject. The two professors stress that it is important to both the private and public sector to have a general understanding of the legal, political and economic frameworks in the environmental and energy field.

- A general understanding makes it possible to make the right decisions. If the company lacks such an overview, it risks making inappropriate and expensive decisions that could have been avoided if it had had the overview, says Ellen Margrethe Basse.

EU means obligations
It is pivotal that the European Parlamentarian Dan Jørgensen visited the graduation at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, as he is deputy chairman of the European Parliament?s environment committee. EU legislation constitutes a great part of the study programme, as it is constantly becoming closer and more binding in the environmental, energy and climate field.

- If the Danish authorities are interested in ensuring an optimal utilisation of the flexibility that EU makes room for, EU legislation probably can ensure good opportunities for Danish companies to do well both on the internal market and globally, says Ellen Margrethe Basse.

In addition to Dan Jørgensen, project manager Aksel Gruelund Sørensen from Energinet.dk and graduate student Johannes Bruun gave a speech. Director of Studies Birgitte Egelund Olsen and Dean Børge Obel spoke on behalf of Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University.

The graduation took place on Friday 18 June at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University.
