ASB students project managers for Aarhus-rapper

Students from ASB have helped rapper Mark Merek to develop his music studio for young people in the western parts of Aarhus and to promote a new CD.

How do you run an open music studio for young people with great talent? How do you promote a CD with young upcoming rappers? And how do you transform theory into specific, easily accessible and usable tools that musicians can use?

These are the challenges that a group of ASB students on their 6th semester have been working with during the past four months as part of the course Project Management. Here they have been collaborating with rapper Mark Merek who runs Trillegårdsstudiet for young musicians in Hasle, which has been a success for both him and the students.

Collaboration as common eye opener
The popularity of the studio and the number of users has increased, stars have emerged and a new CD with hits is on the way, all of which has resulted in new challenges and increasing time pressure for manager Mark Merek. Therefore, the collaboration with the students from ASB has been a great help for him to cope with future challenges:

- It has been very educational. The students have asked a lot of good questions that have made me consider how I can manage and organise this studio in the best way. Furthermore, there have been some excellent suggestions for both the studio?s website and the promotion of our CD and concerts, and generally, there were lots of useful ideas that I had not considered myself, says Mark Merek.

The students have visited the studio several times, as well as Mark has visited ASB a couple of times during the project process.

Real cases strengthen professionalism and career
According to Associate Professor and lecturer in Project Management Constance Kampf, real cases such as Mark Merek and Trillegårdsstudiet are the best way for the students to plan their career according to their studies. In real life, it is necessary to be able to analyse different situations, evaluate challenges and act according to this:

- By means of the casework, the students have learned to identify challenges and problems and not only to focus on issues highlighted by theory. Project management is ultimately about not only methods and tools, but solving problems for people and the students have taken this to heart, says Constance Kampf.

Students in her two courses Project Management and Internet Communication have previously worked with everything from development projects in Uganda and Congo to branding and marketing of the energy drink Antimatter in Denmark and now also the rap studio in Trillegården.

Facts:
- Today, Mark Merek, who, together with other Danish rappers such as L.O.C, Marc Johnson and U$O, is one of the most famous musicians to come from Aarhus, runs a music studio in Trillegården where young people come by to make music about their everyday life. The music will soon be released on CD, as well as the young people will be performing across the country.

- The course Project Management is a 6th semester course, which is part of the BA programme Marketing and Management Communication (MMC). The course focuses on project management from a communicative point of view, where tools for the development and planning of projects adapted to their surroundings are used.
